5 Tips on Picking the Perfect Protection for Your Vacation
Wednesday, September 21st, 2011Most of the time you don’t give Travel Insurance a second thought. However, that certainly changes when you start thinking about your next vacation. Then all the ads you see for travel insurance suddenly take on meaning. Now the search for the right type of travel insurance becomes an important issue.
Here are 5 things to consider before choosing your policy:
1. Be careful that your travel insurance policy doesn’t cost your more than the premium you pay.
Don’t let cost be the overriding factor when looking for a policy. By all means, you need to get the best price you can for your policy. Remember the age-old saying – you only get what you pay for.
Getting the most comprehensive coverage for your situation is what is truly important. Therefore, selecting the least expensive policy may not be your wisest choices. That’s not to say you can’t get the coverage you need at a reasonable price.
Should you be faced with an uncovered loss while traveling, then you could be faced with paying for that loss yourself, when a little extra cost for your insurance premium may have covered it.
2. How does the insurance company respond in an emergency?
Be sure your travel insurance company provides several phone numbers that you can call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That should include toll-free numbers, or numbers that will accept collect calls. You don’t want to find out, when in an emergency situation, that you can only contact your insurance company during normal business hours.
3. What is covered by a standard policy?
There are companies that will give you a really low rate for their standard policy but then add additional premiums for items that may already be covered on another company’s standard policy. Be sure that you are always considering the same items when you compare insurance policies. The insurance company should make suggestions and ask questions to make sure you’re adequately covered.
4. Determine what support companies the insurer work with.
In most cases, insurance companies have formed a relationship with certain service providers. Make sure you’re informed about who would be providing services for medical emergencies or evacuation, if required. Be certain you know how to request emergency assistance.
5. Does the insurance company you’re investigating offer specialized assistance?
Be wary if the insurance company has a standard policy for everyone. You may be paying for coverage you don’t need. Or, you may be under-insured. Find a company that can offer policies for adventure travel, golf vacations, backpacker adventures and even annual travel insurance.
